2025 National Rural Carriers Convention

Camilla Elmes, Industry Engagement Manager, attended the 2025 National Rural Carriers Convention in Canberra over the weekend. The event, hosted by the Livestock, Bulk and Rural Carriers Association, brought together stakeholders from across the country to celebrate the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association's 40th anniversary and discuss important issues facing the bulk and livestock transport sectors.

Several critical workforce issues were highlighted during the convention:

  • Lack of suitable facilities: There is a significant shortage of facilities to support livestock and bulk transport heavy vehicle drivers.
  • Driver shortages: The industry is facing challenges in attracting workers, which is impacting current operations and future growth potential.
  • Career awareness: There is a lack of awareness about careers in rural transport.
  • Recognition and Training: Drivers and operators in these sectors require unique skills and knowledge, which are often under-recognised.

Camilla Elmes had the privilege of presenting on training initiatives to support the industry, alongside Graeme Hoare from Martin’s Stock Haulage and Sharon Dundon from Meat & Livestock Australia.

Additionally, Camilla had the opportunity to catch up with Craig and Collette Forsyth from Steering the Future, an exciting initiative used to showcase driving careers and provide driver safety awareness programs around the country.

The convention highlighted the critical work undertaken by the bulk and livestock transport sectors and their essential role in supporting Australian communities. The discussions and presentations emphasised the need for continued focus on workforce development and industry support to ensure the sustainability and growth of these vital sectors.
