ISA Engages with GAAN to Shape the Future of Aviation Workforce Planning

ISA’s Aviation Industry Engagement Manager, Mori Hajizadeh, recently met with the General Aviation Advisory Network (GAAN) at Parliament House to present the 2025 Aviation Workforce Plan and outline the development process for the upcoming 2026 Plan.

The meeting provided a valuable opportunity to discuss current and emerging workforce challenges across the aviation sector. Mori highlighted several critical issues impacting the industry, including:

  • Shortages in key occupations such as pilots, flight instructors, and Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (LAMEs)
  • The high cost of training, which continues to be a barrier to entry for aspiring aviation professionals
  • The growing influence of autonomous technologies, particularly in regional areas, and the need to proactively identify new skill and knowledge requirements
  • Persistent recruitment and retention challenges, especially in general aviation and remote locations, where workforce support and access to social infrastructure such as housing are essential

GAAN members echoed these concerns and emphasised the urgent need for LAMEs in general aviation. They also discussed the current CASA consultation regarding the recognition of foreign LAME licences and the importance of establishing clear career pathways to attract and retain talent across the sector.

Insights from this meeting will inform the development of the 2026 Industry Workforce Plans, which aims to address industry priorities and support a sustainable, future-ready aviation workforce.

ISA will continue to work closely with stakeholders to ensure collaborative solutions are developed and implemented, reinforcing the importance of ongoing dialogue to meet the evolving needs of Australia’s aviation sector.
