Joint Training and Licensing Program Launched to Boost Women in Transport

Following the success of the Iron Women pilot program, Volvo Trucks Australia, WomenCan Australia, Wodonga TAFE (part of the Northern Victoria Institute of TAFE), and Transport Women Australia Limited came together for a new public–private partnership event aimed at attracting more women into the transport industry.

Held on 10 April in Melbourne, the event showcased the joint training, licensing and job‑placement pathway, featured women already pursuing careers in transport, and provided opportunities to hear from partners, government representatives and industry leaders on practical solutions to the ongoing driver shortage.

David Forbes, Regional Industry Engagement Manager, attended the program launch, highlighting the importance of collaboration in driving meaningful workforce change “The transport and logistics industry employs more than 581,000 people across Australia, yet female participation in operational roles has increased only modestly over the past 20 years, from 15.1 per cent in 2004 to 18.9 per cent in 2024. Women comprise just 5.5 per cent of truck drivers. Initiatives like this are what the industry needs to support workforce growth, improve diversity, and ensure the long‑term sustainability of Australia’s transport and logistics sector.”

The initiative is designed to create clear pathways into secure transport careers while helping address workforce shortages by building a stronger and more sustainable industry pipeline. By bringing together industry, education and advocacy organisations, the partnership delivers a coordinated approach that supports participants at every stage of their journey, from skills development through to employment, with a focus on access, equity and long‑term retention.

Jane Humphreys, Vice President of People and Culture at Volvo Trucks Australia, said the partnership represents a significant step forward for the industry.

“This partnership aims to set a new standard for what an inclusive, professional and sustainable trucking industry should look like. A more equitable and diverse driver workforce introduces new skills, new perspectives and more targeted support for the people who keep our trucks on the road. By investing in this partnership, we’re helping reimagine a transport industry that is fairer, more respectful and more sustainable for everyone,”
