Supporting a Skilled and Safer Heavy Vehicle Driving Workforce

ISA’s Senior Engagement Manager, Camilla Elmes, recently visited Simon National Carriers in Brisbane to meet with workers who have completed, or are currently undertaking, the Heavy Vehicle Driver apprenticeship, a key pathway supporting skills development and safety in the transport and logistics sector.

During the visit, Camilla spoke with drivers participating in the apprenticeship program, which provides structured, accredited training while formally recognising existing industry experience. The apprenticeship is designed to build capability, improve safety outcomes, and acknowledge the high level of skill required to operate heavy vehicles in today’s complex transport environment.

The visit also recognised an important milestone for two workers who were presented with their Heavy Vehicle Driver apprenticeship certificates of completion. Camilla acknowledged the achievement, noting the dedication required to balance work and training while developing the technical and safety‑focused skills essential to the profession.

“The Heavy Vehicle Driver apprenticeship highlights just how skilled this role is,” Camilla said. “It provides drivers with nationally recognised training and supports safer outcomes for industry and the community.”

Thank you to Bill Manton and the team at Simon National Carriers for hosting the visit and sharing insights into their approach to workforce training and development. Their ongoing investment in skills and capability demonstrates the important role employers play in supporting a sustainable and skilled workforce.

The ongoing shortage of appropriately skilled heavy vehicle drivers has been clearly identified in the 2024 and 2025 Transport & Logistics Workforce Plans, with industry facing increasing pressure to attract, train, and retain qualified drivers. In response, ISA is currently delivering two targeted projects aimed at improving training pathways and industry support:

These projects focus on strengthening access to training, improving licensing pathways, and supporting industry to build a workforce equipped with the skills and recognition required for safe and efficient heavy vehicle operations.

ISA will continue to engage closely with industry, training providers, and employers to support workforce development and ensure the transport and logistics sector is equipped to meet current and future demand, and also to provide updates on upcoming projects and initiatives, recognising the sector’s ongoing need for targeted support.
