Showcasing Innovation and Workforce Development in Rail at AusRAIL Plus 2025

Showcasing Innovation and Workforce Development in Rail at AusRAIL Plus 2025

The largest rail event in the Asia-Pacific region, AusRAIL Plus 2025, delivered an outstanding program across three days, featuring over 120 speakers, extensive networking opportunities, and an expected attendance of more than 7,000 rail industry professionals and stakeholders.

The week began with an organised site tour hosted by Alstom at Maidstone, where Carly Grigg, Industry Engagement Manager, explored the new tram maintenance and stabling facility. This development is part of the Victorian Government’s $1.85 billion investment in Next Generation Trams, highlighting the state’s commitment to modernising public transport infrastructure.

AusRAIL Plus provided a unique opportunity to view cutting-edge capabilities from exhibitors and hear from thought leaders on topics shaping the rail workforce, including the impact and influence of policy.

Carly was also honoured to present during the concurrent sessions on Securing the Next Generation Workforce. Her presentation emphasised the importance of collaboration, communication, and strategic planning to build a strong and resilient rail workforce.

Building a Skilled Workforce

Discussions throughout the event focused on aligning both global and local best-practice programs with Australian qualifications and skill sets, and ensuring quality training and accredited outcomes. These strategies aim to strengthen the workforce, increase productivity, and improve efficiency across the rail sector.

Carly was also fortunate to attend the graduation of the first group of graduates to complete the ARA Professional Certificate in Rail. It was great to see Brendan Woods, a valued member of the ISA Strategic Workforce Planning Committee (SWPC) receive his award, reinforcing the strong network for expertise that supports our initiatives.

As part of this commitment, the ISA Rail Career Information project focuses on creating resources that provide comprehensive details on rail occupations, career pathways, and training requirements. This initiative aims to raise awareness of career opportunities, attract a more diverse talent pool, and support workforce development across the rail industry. For more information visit the project page.

Reflecting on the week, Carly shared that her “cup is full” after engaging in meaningful conversations with senior leaders and stakeholders to continue the work that ISA contributes to delivering a strong rail workforce.

A special thanks to the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and sponsoring partners for hosting this exceptional event, which continues to showcase the strength and innovation of the rail sector.
